Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
April, May and October are the months to aim for. April is mild, with highs around 21°C and cool evenings. May warms to the high 20s, and it's still comfortable for walking. October is a little cooler than May, with some of the sunniest, driest days of the year. November rates Excellent too, but it's chilly by the end.
These months suit the Huaguo Mountain (Flower Fruit Mountain) trails, the setting for the Monkey King story from *Journey to the West*. Climbing the steps is far more pleasant in 22°C than in July. You can also wander the old streets of Xinpu and enjoy the sea air along the coast without sweating through your shirt.
Summer: hot, wet and sticky
June is warm and getting damp. July is the hottest month, with highs of 31°C, and it's also the wettest. Rain falls on about 20 days, and humidity stays high. August is nearly as bad. Afternoons feel heavy, and storms can wipe out a beach plan.
If you can only come in summer, pick early June. Beaches and seaside promenades are busiest on weekends and during the school holidays in July and August, when families from across Jiangsu head to the coast. Weekdays are calmer.
Travelling with kids? Go in May instead. The water's still cool, but you'll get dry days and room to move.
Winter: quiet and cold
December to February is cold, with lows just below freezing at night. It's also fairly dry, so you'll often get bright, crisp days. This is low season, and you'll likely have sights like Huaguo Mountain nearly to yourself. The trade-off is a sharp wind off the Yellow Sea, which makes the harbour front feel colder than the numbers suggest.
Winter works well for seafood. Look for fresh catch in local restaurants, and warm up with a hot bowl of noodles or soup.
Chinese New Year usually falls in late January or February. Many small restaurants and shops close for a few days, and trains and roads fill with people heading home. If you're visiting then, expect a quiet town in the middle of it and some closed doors.
Early October also brings the National Day holiday, when much of China travels. Book trains and rooms early, and expect Huaguo Mountain to be busier. Late October is calmer and just as pleasant.
