Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

Spring runs from March to May, and it's the easiest time to be here. March is still cool, with a high of 15°C. By April it's mild and pleasant, and by May it's warm enough for short sleeves. Rain falls on about seven or eight days a month, but it's usually light.

Autumn is just as good. October is the pick: warm days, cool nights and only six rainy days. November is cooler but still rated Excellent, so it works if you like quiet streets and a jacket.

Yancheng is a coastal city, so the big draw is the wetlands. The Yellow Sea Wetlands (a UNESCO World Heritage site) are home to huge flocks of migrating birds. Spring and autumn are when they pass through. Milu deer, a rare species also called Père David's deer, live in the Dafeng reserve nearby. Travelling with kids? Those open spaces are far easier in mild weather.

Summer: hot, wet and sticky

June is the warm-up, with a high of 31°C and 10 rainy days. It's the start of the plum rain season, when grey skies and showers can hang around for days. July is the wettest month by far, at 266 mm on 19 days. August is also rated Poor, with 16 rainy days.

Both months are hot and sticky, with humidity at 84%. Boardwalks and wetland paths turn into steamy, muddy walks. If you must come, keep plans flexible and pick indoor stops on wet afternoons. Yancheng isn't a big tourist city, so you won't fight crowds. But Chinese school holidays run through July and August, so local family trips pick up then.

September is a gentle step back. It's still warm at 28°C, but the rain eases and the rating climbs to Good.

Winter: cold and quiet

December to February are Fair, not bad. Highs sit around 7 to 9°C, and nights drop below freezing in January (-3°C) and slightly in February and December (-1°C). The sun is weak, about three hours a day, and the damp air makes it feel colder than the number suggests.

It's the low season, so you'll have wetland paths mostly to yourself. Birdwatchers may enjoy the winter visitors, and a warm bowl of local seafood noodles is a good way to end a chilly day.

Chinese New Year falls in late January or February, and it's the one busy spell. Many shops close for a few days while families gather. Expect trains and roads to be packed around then. Outside of it, winter is a calm, budget-friendly time to visit.
