When to go to Jiangyin: a seasonal guide
Spring and autumn are your best bet
Jiangyin sits on the south bank of the Yangtze, flat and low, so the seasons here are clear. Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) are the comfortable ones. Days are mild, nights are cool, and you can walk around without sweating through your shirt.
April and May are the sweet spot for a city break. It's warm enough for a long stroll along the river, and rain is steady but rarely heavy. October and November are a little drier and sunnier. Both are good for the old town streets and for the Xu Xiake sights. Xu Xiake was a famous Ming-dynasty traveller born nearby, and his former home is a popular stop.
Summer: hot, wet and sticky
From June to August, expect heat and humidity. July is the wettest month, with rain on 17 days, and nights stay warm at 25°C, the same as August. June brings the plum rain season (called meiyu), when grey, damp weather can hang around for days. Outdoor plans get soggy.
Is summer a bad idea? Not always. If you don't mind showers, museums and indoor food stops are easy to fit in. Just plan your outdoor time for early morning or after a downpour. Late June to July is also when school holidays begin, so family travel picks up, though Jiangyin is far less swamped than Shanghai or Suzhou.
Winter and early spring: quiet and cool
December to February is cold and often grey. Lows hit freezing in January, and the damp air makes it feel sharper than the number suggests. December is the driest month, which helps. There's no heavy tourist season, so you'll have attractions mostly to yourself.
Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February, is the one busy stretch. Many local shops close for a few days as families travel home, but temples and parks fill with locals. Trains and roads are packed around it, so expect delays.
March is a good shoulder month. It's still cool, but it's rated Excellent, and the first spring blossoms appear. Early October brings China's Golden Week holiday, when domestic travel surges and trains book out. If you want autumn weather without the crush, aim for late October or November.
