When to go to Changshu: a seasonal guide
Spring and autumn are the sweet spots
April, May, October and November all get an Excellent rating, and October is our top pick. Days are mild, nights are cool and rain is lighter than in summer. In October you get the most sun of the year, about five hours a day, with only eight rainy days.
This is the best weather for walking Yu Mountain (Yushan) and the old lanes around Shangshu Lake. The mountain sits right inside the city, so it's an easy half day. Try the Changshu beggar's chicken, a local dish baked wrapped in lotus leaves and clay. It's good on a cool evening.
Summer: hot, wet and sticky
June to August are all rated Poor. July is the wettest month, with rain on 18 days, and it's also one of the two hottest, tied with August at a high of 32°C. Nights stay warm, so there's little relief after dark.
June brings the plum rain season (meiyu), a long grey, damp spell across the Yangtze delta. Expect drizzle, soggy shoes and clothes that never quite dry. If you have to come in summer, plan indoor stops. Try the Keyuan or Yanyuan gardens' covered walkways, and the Weng Tonghe memorial hall. Then go out between showers.
September is Fair. It's still warm and humid, but the rain starts easing off.
Winter: quiet and cold
December to February is chilly and damp. January is the coldest month, with highs of 8°C and lows around freezing. Indoor spaces in Changshu often aren't well heated, so a cold, grey day can feel colder than the numbers suggest. December is the driest month, with only 35 mm of rain, and it has the same bright hours as October.
If you hate crowds, winter is your time. The gardens and Yu Mountain are calm, and you'll have lanes mostly to yourself. March is a good shoulder month, as the weather warms up and spring blooms start to show.
Crowds and timing
Changshu isn't a big international tourist stop, so it's busier with domestic visitors than with foreign ones. Expect more people around the May Day holiday in early May and during the National Day holiday in the first week of October. Both are national breaks in China. Travelling with kids? Avoid those weeks if you can, because trains and local sights fill up.
For the best mix of good weather and fewer people, aim for late April, mid-May, or the second half of October into November.
