Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

April is the easiest month to like. Days reach about 21°C, nights are cool, and the canal towns are comfortable to walk around. May is warmer and still rated Good, though the rain creeps up and you'll feel the damp.

October is our top pick. It's dry by Qingpu standards, with only 8 rainy days. November is nearly as good, with crisp air and fewer people. Both months suit a slow day in Zhujiajiao, the old water town, where you can wander stone bridges and lanes and eat zongzi (sticky rice parcels) by the canal.

Summer: hot, wet and sticky

June starts the plum rain season, called meiyu. It's the wettest month here, with 207 mm over 17 days, and the sky stays grey. July and August are the hottest, tied at 32°C highs and 26°C nights. The nights don't cool you down.

Is it worth going? Only if you must. Plan indoor stops for the afternoons, like the Zhujiajiao Museum or a long tea break. August has the most sun of the summer, but it's also the muggiest stretch. September stays warm and showery, then eases off. Chinese school holidays run through July and August, so families fill the lanes of Zhujiajiao on weekends.

Winter: quiet and cold

December to February is damp and chilly, with highs of 9–11°C. Homes often have little heating, so cold feels sharper indoors than the number suggests. December is the driest month at 42 mm, and it's pleasant for a coat-and-scarf stroll.

If you hate crowds, this is your window. The canals are calm, and a hot bowl of noodles tastes better. Dishes like braised pork, a local favourite, suit the weather.

Crowds and events

Crowds peak during the Golden Week holiday around 1 October and the Labour Day break in early May. Both bring heavy domestic travel, so October's best weather comes with a catch. Go in the second half of the month to dodge the worst. Chinese New Year, in late January or February, empties offices but fills temples and family tables. Some small shops close for a few days. Mid-Autumn Festival, usually September or early October, is a good time for mooncakes.
