Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

April, October and November all score Excellent, and October comes out on top. In October you get mild afternoons, cool evenings and the fewest rainy days of the year. It's a good time for walking the old water town of Zhouzhuang, with its canals and stone bridges. Qiandeng, a smaller canal town nearby, is also easy to enjoy on foot.

April is a little wetter but still comfortable. March and May are Good, so they work too, though May starts to feel warmer and stickier. If you like gardens and slow strolls, spring is hard to beat.

Summer: hot, wet and sticky

June is the wettest month here, with rain on about half the days. This is the plum rain season, called meiyu, when grey skies and damp air settle over the Yangtze delta. It's followed by July and August, which are the hottest, tied at 32°C highs and 26°C lows. Nights bring little relief.

Travelling with kids? Summer is tough for long walks. If you must come, plan indoor stops and save canal-side wandering for the evening. Dragon Boat Festival usually falls in June, and you may catch boat races and see zongzi, sticky rice dumplings wrapped in leaves, in every shop.

September is still warm and fairly wet, so it's only Fair. Things improve fast once October arrives.

Winter: quiet and chilly

December is the driest month, with the sunniest days and few rainy ones. January and February are colder and damper, with lows near freezing in January. There's no heating in many older buildings in this part of China, so indoor spaces can feel colder than you'd expect. A bowl of hot noodles is a real comfort. Try aozao noodles, a local Kunshan dish.

Crowds are lightest in winter, apart from Chinese New Year, which falls in January or February. Many people travel then, and some small shops close for a few days. If you want quiet canals, early December is a good pick.

Crowds and timing

Expect more visitors on the October Golden Week holiday, in early October, and on other public holidays. Zhouzhuang gets especially busy. If you hate crowds, go in mid-October or November, on a weekday. Shanghai is close, so weekends can bring day-trippers all year.
