Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

April is Excellent, and so are October and November. October is our top pick. Days are mild at around 24°C, nights are cool, and only 8 days see rain. April feels fresh and green, though it's a bit damper. March and May are Good, with May warming up fast.

These months suit almost any trip. You can walk the old streets of Qibao, a water town inside Minhang with canals, snack stalls and a long pedestrian lane. You can also cycle along the Huangpu River at Minhang's riverside parks. Try the local pork dumplings and sweet rice cakes while the air is comfortable.

Summer: hot, wet and sticky

June to August are all rated Poor. June is the wettest month at 207 mm, and it's the start of meiyu, the long grey "plum rain" season. July and August are the hottest, tied at 32°C highs and 26°C lows. Nights don't give much relief.

If you come anyway, plan indoor stops for the afternoon. Malls, museums and Minhang's cafés near Hongqiao-area transport hubs make good escapes. Late summer can also bring typhoon-edge storms, so keep your plans loose. September is Fair, still warm and showery but easing off.

Winter: quiet and cold

December is Good and the driest month, at 42 mm. January and February are Fair. Highs sit around 9–10°C, and the damp air makes it feel colder than the number. Indoor heating is patchy in Shanghai homes and older buildings, so a warm hotel matters here.

Winter is the low season for leisure travel. You'll find easier tables and shorter lines at attractions, with hot pots and noodle soups to warm you up.

Crowds and events

Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February, empties the city as people head home. Some small shops close for a few days, though big malls stay open. The two big crowd times are the Labour Day break around 1 May and the National Day "Golden Week" in early October. Domestic travel peaks then, so trains and sights fill up even though the weather is lovely.

For October, aim for the second half of the month to miss the worst of the rush. The Mid-Autumn Festival, with its mooncakes, falls in September or early October. It's a good time to try them from local bakeries.
