Minhang stays warm in September, with highs around 29°C and evenings near 22°C. Humidity is still high, and rain can interrupt plans, so expect sticky afternoons and the odd downpour. August is hotter and wetter; October is cooler and drier.

Qibao Ancient Town works well for a relaxed wander between showers. Its lanes, old bridges and snack stalls are close together, so you can duck inside when rain picks up. Save long outdoor walks for a dry spell, and don't count on a full beach day: Minhang is inland, not a seaside district.

Events and crowds

Shanghai Tourism Festival usually brings events around the city in September, though the programme and dates change each year. Mid-Autumn Festival may also fall in September; its date follows the lunar calendar, so it can land in October instead.

If you hate crowds, September is often calmer than October's National Day holiday period. The city can get busier as that holiday nears, especially at major sights. You'll generally find fewer holiday visitors than in October, and stays may cost less than during Golden Week, though prices vary.

Make Qibao your rainy-day stop

Travelling with kids? Qibao's compact old-town streets are easier to explore than a long outdoor route when showers come and go. Try Qibao tangyuan, sweet rice balls sold around the old street, while you wait for rain to ease.

Take Metro Line 9 to Qibao station, then walk to the ancient town. The station and old street are close, which makes this a handy outing when the weather turns. Check the forecast before setting off, since September rain can make outdoor sightseeing less comfortable.
