May feels warm and damp, with afternoons reaching 26°C and evenings cooling to around 17°C. Rain falls on about 11 days, and humidity is high, so a sunny walk can turn sticky, while showers may interrupt outdoor plans. There's plenty of daylight, but cloud often softens the sunshine.

It's a good month for Qibao Ancient Town's lanes and canals, or a stroll through Minhang Cultural Park between showers. Keep indoor sights in reserve for wet afternoons. Long, exposed walks can feel muggy, and June brings heavier rain and hotter days.

May Day and crowds

The May Day public holiday brings a busy spell to Shanghai, including popular spots such as Qibao. Expect more people on the lanes and queues at food stalls. Outside the holiday, Minhang is generally easier to explore than central Shanghai's best-known sights.

If you hate crowds, visit Qibao on a weekday, away from the May Day break.

Prices can rise around the holiday as more people travel, while ordinary weekdays are usually a calmer time to find accommodation. May isn't as quiet as the low season, but it's not typically the peak autumn period either. October is the best month overall, so May can suit you if you'd rather travel before that busier season.

Make the most of your visit

For Qibao, take Metro Line 9 to Qibao station; the old town is close by. That makes it easy to duck back indoors if a shower rolls in. Try Qibao tangyuan, sweet rice balls sold around the old town, for a local snack.

May's mild evenings are pleasant for a relaxed meal, but rain can leave the stone lanes slick. Check the forecast before setting out for a long wander, and save the indoor museums or shops for wet spells.
