May feels warm and increasingly humid in Puxi. Afternoons can reach 26°C, while evenings are milder, around 17°C. Rain falls on 11 days, so showers can interrupt a walk, but they don't rule out exploring.

The Bund and the tree-lined streets of the French Concession are good for unhurried walks between showers. Skip long outdoor plans on sticky, rainy afternoons; duck into the Shanghai Museum or a café on Wukang Road instead. June is hotter and much wetter, so May is easier for sightseeing.

If you hate crowds, visit after the holiday and explore popular sights on a weekday. Away from the holiday, May is a pleasant spring shoulder season: livelier than April, but generally less packed than major holiday periods.

Long daylight gives you room for a relaxed city day. Walk the Bund in the morning, then cross into the former French Concession for cafés and leafy lanes. Keep indoor stops in mind in case rain rolls through.

Travelling with kids? Take Metro Line 10 to Yuyuan Garden station rather than relying on a long walk through crowded streets. The garden and nearby Old City can get especially busy during Labour Day. For a local snack break, look for xiaolongbao, Shanghai's soup-filled dumplings, around the area. Check the filling before you bite; the broth inside is hot.
