Puxi Weather in December

December feels chilly

Puxi's winter days are cool, with highs around 11°C and lows near 3°C. Rain falls on about seven days, and the shorter daylight can make afternoons feel brief. It's much drier than November, though January is colder and wetter.

You can still enjoy city walks between showers. The Former French Concession's leafy streets and the Shanghai Museum work well on clear days; save longer outdoor plans for the sunniest part of the day. The Bund can feel especially cold when wind comes off the Huangpu River, so don't plan to linger there after dark.

Christmas lights and New Year

December brings Christmas decorations to shopping areas such as Xintiandi and Nanjing Road, though Christmas isn't a public holiday in China. You'll also see New Year displays as the month ends. Events vary each year, so treat the decorations as a pleasant extra rather than the focus of your trip.

If you hate crowds, visit the Bund on a weekday afternoon, not New Year's Eve. The waterfront draws people for evening views, and popular shopping streets get busy around the holidays.

A quieter city break

December is winter low season, so Puxi is generally quieter and hotel prices are often lower than in October, one of Shanghai's best months to visit. It's a good time for museums, cafés and unhurried meals, but less appealing for long outdoor days.

Travelling with kids? Take the metro to East Nanjing Road, then walk toward the Bund when the riverfront is still bright. If the cold sets in, warm up with a bowl of xiaolongbao—soup dumplings—around Yu Garden. The nearby lanes make an easy indoor-outdoor stop without committing to a long riverside stroll.
