December: cool and damp

December is generally calmer than October, Shanghai's best-known month for comfortable weather. You'll usually find fewer visitors at major sights than during autumn's popular travel period. Prices can be lower than in peak months, though they vary by hotel and date.

For a practical cold-weather route, take the Huangpu River ferry between Puxi and Pudong, then warm up indoors near Lujiazui. You'll get skyline views without spending the whole day outside. Check the ferry's current service before setting out, since cold or poor weather can affect the ride.
