October weather in Shanghai

October is one of Shanghai's easiest months for getting around. Days feel mild, while evenings along the Huangpu River can feel cool. The average high is 24°C and the low is 16°C, so walking the Bund or exploring the Former French Concession is comfortable.

Rain falls on about eight days, but October is much drier than September. You can still get caught in a shower, so keep indoor stops such as the Shanghai Museum in mind. The weather suits long city walks and day trips; it's less reliable for a full day outdoors at a water park.

Golden Week crowds

China's National Day holiday begins on October 1, bringing Golden Week and a rush of domestic visitors. The Bund, Yu Garden and popular train routes can feel packed, and hotel prices often rise around the holiday.

If you hate crowds, visit later in October. It's generally calmer and better value than Golden Week, though weekends still draw plenty of local visitors. Shanghai's autumn weather makes the month popular, so don't expect the city to be quiet.

Make the most of your visit

Travelling with kids? The Shanghai Natural History Museum is a useful rainy-day stop, with plenty to see indoors.

For a practical way to cross the river, take the public ferry from the Bund to Lujiazui. It gives you a close view of the skyline without committing to a long river cruise. Go outside the busiest holiday period if you'd rather avoid queues near the terminals. In the evening, walk along the Bund to see Pudong's towers lit up; the riverside can feel cooler than the sheltered streets nearby.
