October is one of the best months to explore Pudong. Afternoons reach about 24°C, while evenings cool to around 16°C. It's much less sticky than September, so walking the Lujiazui riverside promenade or visiting the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum feels easier. Rain still falls on several days, though, so keep indoor stops like the Shanghai Museum East in mind.

The shorter daylight hours make late afternoon a good time for river views, but don't leave a long outdoor visit until evening. The Bund is across the river in Puxi, and the skyline looks especially good from Pudong's waterfront.

Holidays and crowds

China's National Day holiday begins on October 1. It brings a major travel rush, and popular sights such as the Shanghai Tower and Shanghai Disneyland can feel packed. Hotels and transport often cost more during the holiday than in quieter months.

If you hate crowds, visit later in October. The holiday rush has passed, and you'll usually find a calmer city than during peak summer travel. Travelling with kids? Shanghai Disneyland is fun, but the National Day queues can take much of the day.

Make the most of your visit

October's mild days suit a mix of city walks and indoor sightseeing. You can stroll around Century Park, then head to Lujiazui for the skyline after dark. Skip a full day on the beach: Pudong's October weather is better for city sights than swimming, and rain can interrupt outdoor plans.

For a practical local tip, use the Shanghai Metro to reach Lujiazui rather than relying on a taxi around the tower district. Roads can slow sharply during busy holiday periods, while the station puts you close to the Oriental Pearl Tower and riverside paths.
