Visiting Shanghai in January
January feels cold and grey
Shanghai's winter is chilly and often cloudy. Daytime highs reach 9°C, while nights can fall to 1°C. Rain comes on about nine days, and damp air can make the cold feel sharper than the figures suggest.
You can still enjoy city walks between showers. The Bund and the French Concession are quieter without autumn's crowds, but long outdoor days may feel uncomfortable. Save the Shanghai Tower's views for a clearer spell; on grey days, indoor sights like the Shanghai Museum work better. January is drier than February, though wetter than December.
New Year and holiday timing
January brings New Year celebrations, but the bigger holiday may be Lunar New Year, which sometimes falls in January. Its dates change each year. If it lands during your visit, expect more domestic travel and some smaller businesses to close. Yu Garden's lantern displays are a seasonal draw around the holiday, though dates vary.
Travelling with kids? The Shanghai Natural History Museum is a good rainy-day stop, with plenty to see indoors.
Quieter streets, with a catch
Outside the Lunar New Year travel period, January is usually a quieter, lower-demand time than October, Shanghai's best-known travel month. You may find better hotel prices than in the busy autumn season, and popular sights can feel less crowded. Holiday dates are the exception: trains and city attractions can fill up.
For a warming local meal, order xiaolongbao—soup dumplings—around Yuyuan Garden, then visit the nearby bazaar. At the Bund, take the short ferry across the Huangpu River instead of lingering on the exposed waterfront when the wind picks up. The ride still gives you city views, with less time in the cold.
