Visiting Shanghai in March

Mild days, damp edges

March feels like Shanghai easing into spring, but it's not reliably warm. Afternoons reach about 15°C, while mornings and evenings can fall to 6°C. The air is often cloudy, and rain falls on around 11 days, so outdoor plans can turn grey or wet.

The season works well for walking the Bund, exploring the former French Concession's tree-lined streets, or visiting Yu Garden between showers. The garden's ponds and tiled roofs are lovely in spring, but wet paths can be slippery. Save long riverfront strolls for clearer spells, and don't count on beach weather.

Events and crowds

Shanghai's Cherry Blossom Festival at Gucun Park usually starts around late March or early April, though bloom timing shifts each year. It can draw big local crowds when the flowers open. March 8 is International Women's Day, but it isn't a major travel holiday across the city.

If you hate crowds, visit Gucun Park on a weekday and keep your other sightseeing flexible. March is generally calmer than October, one of Shanghai's busiest and most popular months. Hotel demand and prices are often less pressured than during October's holiday rush, though weekends and blossom season can still be busy.

Make the most of March

Travelling with kids? The Shanghai Natural History Museum is an easy rainy-day stop, with plenty to see indoors. For a warming break, try shengjianbao, pan-fried pork buns, around Huanghe Road; the hot soup inside can catch you out, so take a small bite first.

A useful local trick: use the Metro's Line 2 for the Bund and Lujiazui, but check the weather before crossing the river for skyline views. Cloudy skies can hide the tops of Pudong's towers. Keep a nearby indoor stop, such as the Shanghai Tower observation deck, as a backup.
