February feels chilly

Minhang is in winter in February, and the weather can feel damp and grey. Days reach about 10°C, but evenings drop to 2°C. Rain falls on around 11 days, and the high humidity can make the cold feel sharper.

You can still enjoy indoor stops, including the Shanghai Qibao Museum, or wander Qibao Ancient Town between showers. But long walks by the water may feel chilly, and wet stone lanes can be slippery. Save a full day outdoors for a brighter spell.

Lunar New Year crowds

Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February. If it does, you'll notice festive decorations and busy travel days, while some smaller shops and restaurants may close so staff can visit family. The Lantern Festival can also land in February, marking the end of the New Year period.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling on the main holiday days. Minhang is generally quieter and often less costly than October, one of Shanghai's most popular months. Still, holiday travel can push up demand, especially around the start and end of the break.

Make Qibao your rainy-day stop

Travelling with kids? Qibao Ancient Town is a handy choice: you can explore its lanes, duck into small shops, and stop for Qibao steamed buns without committing to a long outdoor outing.

A practical tip: take Metro Line 9 to Qibao station, then walk to the old town. The station is close enough to make a quick visit manageable when the weather turns. Try the local steamed buns while you're there, but don't expect every stall to be open during Lunar New Year.
