Best Time to Visit Suzhou

Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

April and May are easy months in Suzhou. Days are mild to warm, and the rain is light enough that you can wander between gardens without much fuss. April is the better pick if you like cooler walking weather. By late May it's getting warm and a little sticky.

October is our top-rated month, and November isn't far behind. Mornings are crisp, afternoons are pleasant, and it's the driest stretch of the warm season. Autumn is great for the classical gardens, like the Humble Administrator's Garden and the Lingering Garden, where you can stroll for hours. Evenings along Pingjiang Road, the old canal street, feel cosy. Late autumn is also when hairy crab season gets going. Yangcheng Lake, just outside the city, is the famous source.

Summer: hot, wet and sticky

June to August all rate Poor, and that's fair. June and July bring the plum rain season, called meiyu, with rain on more than half the days. July is the wettest month. July and August are also the joint hottest, with nights that barely cool down.

If you come anyway, plan around the weather. Spend hot afternoons inside the Suzhou Museum, designed by I. M. Pei, or take a boat ride on the canals in the evening. Chinese school holidays run through July and August, so domestic tour groups fill the big gardens. Go at opening time or late in the day. September is still muggy and wet, but it's quieter and starts to ease.

Winter: quiet and cold

December is surprisingly dry and sunny for the season, though it's cold and damp indoors. January and February are the chilliest, with lows near freezing. Snow is rare, but the chill feels sharper in the humid air. The upside is space. You may have the Master of Nets Garden almost to yourself, and a hot bowl of noodles in Soup Noodle Shop style feels like a treat.

Chinese New Year usually falls in late January or February. Many local shops close for a few days, but the city is festive, with lanterns and temple visits. Travel around the holiday is very busy, so trains book up fast.

When to go

Pick April or October if you want the best odds. Choose November for fewer people and still-comfortable days. Visit in winter if you hate crowds and don't mind a coat. Skip July unless you have no choice.
