June: warm and damp

June feels hot, sticky and often overcast in Suzhou. The high reaches 30°C, and humidity sits around 78%. Rain falls on 16 days, so a garden visit may turn into a dash between showers. It's the start of the summer plum rains, known locally as meiyu.

The Humble Administrator's Garden is still lovely in the rain, but its stone paths can get slippery. Save a canal-side stroll in Pingjiang Road for a drier spell. With little daily sunshine, long outdoor sightseeing days can feel tiring.

Dragon Boat season

The Dragon Boat Festival can fall in June, though its date changes each year. You may see races and find zongzi, sticky rice parcels wrapped in leaves, in local shops. Festival days can bring extra visitors to popular sights and transport.
