Mild days for gardens

May is warm and often comfortable for walking, with afternoons reaching 27°C and evenings cooling to 16°C. It's spring, so the Humble Administrator's Garden and the canals around Pingjiang Road make easy outings. Rain falls on about 10 days, and cloudy skies are common; showers can interrupt a long stroll, so keep indoor stops like Suzhou Museum in mind.

May gets more rain than April, but far less than June. The muggy feel is building, though it's usually easier for sightseeing than the hotter, wetter months ahead. Long garden visits work well; save strenuous walks for cooler parts of the day.

May Day crowds

China's May Day public holiday brings a surge of domestic visitors. Suzhou's famous gardens and Pingjiang Road can feel packed, and hotel rates often rise around the break. Outside the holiday, May is still a popular spring month, so expect more visitors than in quieter winter periods. October is Suzhou's best month overall, but May has pleasant garden weather.

If you hate crowds, avoid the May Day holiday and visit gardens on a weekday.

Make room for rain

May's showers don't usually rule out a city break, but they can make cobbled lanes and garden paths slippery. Keep your plans flexible rather than counting on a full day outdoors. The 13.6 hours of daylight give you time to fit in a museum or a canal walk when skies clear.
