January: chilly garden walks

January feels cold and damp in Suzhou. Highs reach 8°C, while nights can fall to 0°C. Rain comes on several days, and cloudy skies are common, so the canals and stone lanes can feel grey and chilly.

You can still enjoy classical gardens, especially the covered walkways and halls at the Humble Administrator's Garden. Tiger Hill also works for a shorter outing, but wet paths can be slippery. Save long canal-side walks for a dry spell, and don't expect a warm, sunny day at the water's edge.

If you hate crowds, choose a weekday for the Humble Administrator's Garden and avoid the Chinese New Year travel period. A slower indoor stop can be a welcome break when the damp cold sets in.
