February feels damp and chilly

Suzhou's winter hasn't quite let go in February. Days reach about 11°C, but nights can fall to 1°C, and the high humidity makes the cold feel clammy. Rain falls on around 11 days, with plenty of cloudy skies, so don't expect long, sunny afternoons.

You can still enjoy the classical gardens, especially when you're happy to take your time between sheltered paths and indoor halls. The canals and stone bridges in Pingjiang Road are lovely for a short wander, but cold rain can make a long stroll less appealing. Save a full day of outdoor sightseeing for a clearer spell.

Holiday crowds vary

Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February, as does the Lantern Festival, held on the fifteenth day of the lunar new year. Dates change each year. The holiday can bring busy trains and crowded sights, while some smaller shops and restaurants may close.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the main New Year holiday. Outside it, February is generally quieter than October, Suzhou's best-known month for a visit, and visitor demand is usually lower. Expect a very different feel during the holiday itself.

Make the gardens cosy

A damp February day suits a slower visit to the Humble Administrator's Garden. Pause in its halls and covered walkways rather than trying to rush around every pond and pavilion. For a warming meal, look for Suzhou-style noodle soup near Guanqian Street.

Travelling with kids? Keep Pingjiang Road to a shorter loop if the rain sets in, then duck into a tea house nearby. Check whether your chosen restaurant or garden is open during the New Year holiday, when local schedules can change.
