October weather

October is one of Suzhou's best months for a visit. Days feel mild, evenings cooler, and the air is less sticky than in September. Rain still falls on some days, but showers are less frequent than the month before.

It's comfortable weather for strolling through the Humble Administrator's Garden or taking a boat along the canals. You can also walk around Pingjiang Road without the summer heat. Save indoor stops, such as the Suzhou Museum, for a rainy spell. By November, days are cooler, so October gives you more time outdoors.

Holidays and crowds

China's National Day holiday begins in October. The first week, often called Golden Week, brings many domestic visitors to Suzhou. Gardens, canal boats and train stations can feel packed, and hotel prices are often higher than in quieter months.

If you hate crowds, avoid the holiday week and visit later in October. You'll still get pleasant autumn weather, with a calmer feel at popular sights. October is a busy month overall, though, since it's widely considered one of the best times to visit.

Travelling with kids? A boat ride through the canals can be a welcome rest between garden visits. For a quieter walk, try the lanes around Shantang Street early in your day, before tour groups arrive.

At the Humble Administrator's Garden, check the ticket details before setting out. Entry arrangements can vary, and the garden can be crowded during Golden Week. If you're visiting then, choosing a less famous garden, such as the Master of the Nets Garden, may make for a more relaxed stop. After your walk, try Suzhou-style noodles, known for their sweet broth and toppings.
