October is one of the best times to visit Jiading, and you'll feel why once you're out in it. Afternoons are mild and evenings cool down, so you won't have September's sticky heat to contend with. Rain is less frequent than in September, but showers still fall on some days. Skies can be cloudy, so don't count on sunshine all day.

That makes October good for wandering Jiading Old Town, visiting the Confucius Temple, or taking a quiet break in Qiuxia Garden. A wet afternoon can make garden paths slippery, so keep indoor sights for the rainy spells. The cooler air also suits a walk around Fahua Pagoda. You'll have far less reason to dodge the heat than you would in summer.

Holidays and crowds

China's National Day holiday falls at the start of October, and it's the busiest part of the month. Jiading's popular sights fill up, and trains and hotels across Shanghai may cost more. If crowds aren't your thing, aim for the period after the holiday, when the Old Town is usually calmer.

Outside the holiday, October is a pleasant shoulder season. It's still a popular month, along with April, but you'll generally find fewer visitors than during Golden Week. If your dates are flexible, November is a fair alternative: it's cooler, though it gets the same amount of rain.

Travelling with kids? Qiuxia Garden's ponds and winding paths make a gentle outing, and the milder weather is easier for a long wander than September's heat. Keep a flexible plan for rain, and if the skies turn, the Jiading Museum is a handy indoor stop near the Old Town.

For an easy local route, pair the Confucius Temple with Fahua Pagoda and the old streets nearby. They're close enough to explore in one outing, with a stop in the garden to slow things down. If rain starts, pause inside rather than rushing between sights. Daylight is shorter in October than in summer, so leave time to enjoy the garden before dusk.
