Visiting Suzhou in August
August: hot and humid
Suzhou in August feels sticky from the moment you step outside. Daytime highs reach 32°C, and nights stay warm at about 25°C. Humidity is high, with rain on many days, often in short, heavy bursts. July is rainier, but August still brings plenty of wet weather.
The heat and showers can make long walks around the old town tiring. Save indoor stops, such as the Suzhou Museum, for the hottest or wettest part of the day. The gardens are lovely, but their stone paths and narrow covered walkways can feel crowded when visitors take shelter from rain.
Pick your outings
The Grand Canal and the old lanes around Pingjiang Road are pleasant for a shorter visit. If the sky clears, a boat ride gives you a break from walking. Leave long garden visits for cooler hours, and expect sudden showers to interrupt plans.
If you hate crowds, avoid the busiest parts of Pingjiang Road in the afternoon. Chinese school holidays bring many domestic families to Suzhou, so August is livelier than quieter autumn months. Prices can also be higher than in less busy periods, though October's popular travel season can be crowded too.
Local tips
There isn't one fixed August festival to plan around: traditional dates such as Qixi change each year. Check the lunar calendar if you're hoping to catch seasonal celebrations, but don't build your trip around a specific event.
At the Humble Administrator's Garden, go early and follow the covered corridors between courtyards. They offer some shelter from rain and give you time to enjoy the ponds without lingering in the sun. Travelling with kids? Keep the garden visit short, then cool off with a bowl of Suzhou-style noodles nearby.
