Visiting Baku in August
August heat by the Caspian
August is hot and mostly dry in Baku, with highs around 29°C and little rain. The humidity can make afternoons feel sticky, especially among the stone buildings of Icherisheher, the Old City. Save long walks around the Maiden Tower and Palace of the Shirvanshahs for cooler parts of the day.
The waterfront promenade works well when you want an open-air stroll, while the carpet collection at the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum offers a welcome indoor break. The sea breeze can help, but don't count on it making the middle of the day comfortable.
What's on, and how busy it gets
August isn't marked by a major national public holiday, and Baku doesn't have a dependable, citywide August festival. Summer concerts and performances may appear on local calendars, but there's no single annual event to build a visit around.
It's still high season, so expect more visitors and firmer hotel prices than in quieter months such as May or October. If you hate crowds, aim for September: it's cooler, though wetter than August.
August in Baku: local tips
Travelling with kids? Keep the hottest hours for a hotel break or an indoor stop, then head out to the Bulvar, Baku's long Caspian-side promenade, later in the day. August brings long daylight, so there's time for a relaxed evening without rushing between sights.
For a practical local tip, take the Baku funicular up to Highland Park rather than walking uphill in the heat. You'll get views over the Flame Towers, the Old City and the bay, then can come back down for dinner near Fountain Square. Try qutab, a thin stuffed flatbread, at a local café; it's an easy meal after a day of sightseeing.
