Baku Weather in December

December feels cool

Baku's December days are cool and often cloudy, with highs around 10°C and nights near 7°C. Rain is usually brief, but damp air can make evenings feel colder. You'll get only a little sun, so keep outdoor plans flexible.

The Old City's lanes and the Maiden Tower are still good for a wander between showers. For a warmer break, explore the indoor displays at the Heydar Aliyev Center or settle in for tea and pakhlava. The seafront Boulevard is less appealing on grey, chilly days, and December isn't a beach month.

Winter plans and holidays

New Year brings lights and seasonal decorations to central Baku, especially around Fountain Square and Nizami Street. December 31 is also World Azerbaijanis Solidarity Day, a public holiday. Expect a festive feel around New Year, though the city isn't known for a major month-long winter festival.

If you hate crowds, visit the Old City on an ordinary weekday rather than around New Year's Eve. Baku is in its quieter winter season, so you'll generally find fewer visitors and better hotel deals than from May to October. Holiday evenings can still draw local crowds into the centre.

Local tips for Baku

Travelling with kids? Pair a short walk along the Boulevard with an indoor stop, rather than expecting a full day outdoors. December has just over nine hours of daylight, so sightseeing feels best when you group nearby stops.

A useful local tip: if rain slicks the Old City's stone lanes, take the metro to Icherisheher station and keep your walk to the flatter streets around the main gates. The narrow lanes can be slippery underfoot. For dinner, warm up with dushbara, small dumplings served in broth, at an Azerbaijani restaurant near the Old City.
