Baku and the rest of the country

Baku is the only city we cover, and its best months are May to October. It sits on the Caspian Sea, so summer is hot but the sea breeze helps. August is the hottest month at 29°C. Walking the old walled city, Icheri Sheher, feels fine in the morning and a bit slow by mid-afternoon.

Outside Baku, timing changes. The Greater Caucasus towns of Guba, Gabala and Shahdag are cooler in summer, so they suit July and August well. Shahdag is the main ski resort, and winter is its season. The lowlands around Sheki and Lankaran are greener and wetter, so pack for rain if you head there.

Seasons

Spring and early autumn are the sweet spots. You can stroll the seafront boulevard and climb to the Flame Towers without melting. June is the wettest month in Baku at 46 mm, but that's still a light amount, so showers rarely ruin a day.

Summer is the time for the Caspian. Beaches along the Absheron Peninsula, like Bilgah and Shuvalan, get busy at weekends. Winter is cooler and windy, which fits its nickname, the "City of Winds". It's quiet, and it's a fair time for museums, tea houses and plov (rice with lamb or dried fruit).

Holidays and crowds

Novruz, the spring new year around 20 to 21 March, is the biggest celebration. Expect bonfires, sweet pakhlava, and a week of days off, so trains and buses fill up. Independence Day on 28 May and Victory Day on 8 November are also public holidays, with shops and offices closed.

The Baku Formula 1 race, usually held in spring or autumn, pushes hotel rooms up and fills the centre. Check the date before you pick your trip.

High season runs from June to September, when domestic holidaymakers and visitors from nearby countries arrive. If you want calmer streets and easier hotel hunting, aim for May or October. Travelling in November to March? Expect lower demand, but not beach weather.
