October: mild city days

October feels comfortable for walking around Baku. Afternoons are mild, while evenings cool off; the average high is 19°C and the low is 16°C. Rain falls on about five days, so you may get a shower, but it's rarely a reason to cancel a whole day.

The Old City is good for wandering, and the Caspian-facing promenade stays pleasant for a stroll. You can also take the funicular up to Highland Park for views over the city and bay. The sea is less tempting than in September, and long beach days are less reliable.

Events and autumn crowds

Azerbaijan marks Restoration of Independence Day on October 18. It's a national observance, though celebrations can vary from year to year. Baku's International Jazz Festival has also often been held in October, but dates and programmes change.

If you hate crowds, October is a calmer choice than the busy summer season. The weather is still comfortable for sightseeing, but you're past the peak beach months. Hotel rates can be lower than in summer, though prices vary with events and demand.

Make the most of your visit

Travelling with kids? The compact Old City makes it easier to pause for a snack or a break between sights. Try qutab, a thin filled flatbread sold at local eateries; it's an easy lunch between the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs.

One local tip: take the funicular from the waterfront up to Highland Park, then walk down towards the Flame Towers. The climb is easier in October's mild weather, and you'll get broad views without tackling the steep route uphill. Keep a small umbrella handy for the occasional shower.
