Visiting Baku in January
Cool days by the Caspian
January in Baku feels cool, often cloudy, and a little damp. Highs reach about 8°C, with lows around 5°C. Rain is limited, but the Caspian wind can make the seafront feel colder than the numbers suggest.
You can still enjoy the Old City's stone lanes, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and warm stops for tea. The Boulevard is pleasant for a short walk when the wind eases. Save long beach days and exposed walks for another season; winter isn't Baku's best time for either.
A quieter winter visit
If you hate crowds, January is a calm time to explore the Maiden Tower and the carpet museum. Visitor numbers are generally lower than in the warmer months, and hotels are often less expensive than during peak season. The New Year period can be busier, so expect more activity around central streets and shopping areas.
January 20 is a solemn day of remembrance for the victims of Black January. People visit Martyrs' Lane, where you can pay your respects and see views across the city. Keep the mood in mind if you're visiting that day.
Make the most of short days
Daylight is limited, so fit outdoor sights such as Highland Park into the brighter part of your day. Then head indoors to the Azerbaijan National Museum of Art or settle into a teahouse in the Old City. The weather's fair for sightseeing, but don't count on long, sunny afternoons.
Travelling with kids? Keep the seafront walk short if the wind picks up, then warm up with qutab, a thin stuffed flatbread, near the Old City. At 5.4 out of 10 for comfort, January works best for city breaks, not beach plans.
