Visiting Tbilisi in August
August heat
August is hot and mostly sunny in Tbilisi. Afternoons can feel sticky on the stone streets of the Old Town, though evenings are more comfortable. Rain is limited, so showers are unlikely to disrupt most plans.
Save the long walk around Narikala Fortress for morning or evening. The cable car from Rike Park gives you a cooler way up, with views over the Mtkvari River. Cafés in Sololaki and shady spots in Vake Park suit the hottest hours better than exposed sightseeing. A hike on Mtatsminda's trails can also wait until the day cools.
Events and crowds
Mariamoba, the Orthodox feast of the Dormition of Mary, falls in August. You may see people attending services at Tbilisi's churches, including Sameba Cathedral. It's a religious holiday, not a city-wide street festival.
Summer is a popular time to visit, so the Old Town and main sights can feel busy. Prices for places to stay are often higher than in April or October, which are among the better months for a visit. September is cooler, too.
If you hate crowds, try the Old Town's lanes early, before tour groups fill the main streets.
Make the heat easier
With long daylight and warm evenings, you can split your day: visit a museum or linger over khinkali at lunch, then see the city on foot later. Avoid a long midday climb between the Old Town and Narikala; it's steep and exposed.
For a practical shortcut, take the Rike Park cable car up to Narikala and walk down towards the sulfur-bath district of Abanotubani. You'll save energy for the lanes and carved wooden balconies below. The baths are famous, but a hot soak may feel less appealing after a scorching afternoon. Reserve that treat for an evening, when the air has eased.
