Visiting Tbilisi in September
September weather
September feels warm rather than scorching: afternoons can reach 28°C, while evenings cool to around 15°C. It's far more comfortable for wandering Sololaki's old streets or climbing up to Narikala Fortress than August, when highs reach 34°C. Rain falls on about seven days, so a shower may interrupt an outdoor plan.
The cooler evenings also suit dinner in the Old Town, especially if you want to try khinkali, Georgian dumplings, at a traditional restaurant. Save longer walks for later in the day, and don't count on an uninterrupted stretch of dry weather.
What to do
September works well for exploring Tbilisi on foot, riding the cable car to Narikala, and stopping at the sulfur baths in Abanotubani. The warm days are still good for sitting outdoors, but the midday sun can make steep climbs feel tiring. If rain arrives, duck into the Georgian National Museum or one of the cafés along Rustaveli Avenue.
Travelling with kids? The cable car ride gives you a fun way up to Narikala without tackling the whole hill on foot.
September is also the start of rtveli, Georgia's grape harvest. For a harvest outing, head beyond Tbilisi to Kakheti, the country's main wine region. Tbilisoba, the city's big annual celebration, is usually held in October, so don't assume it will be on during a September visit.
Crowds and local tips
September is a shoulder-season month. It's generally calmer than peak summer, and the drop from August's heat makes sightseeing easier. Prices can ease after the summer rush, though popular areas such as the Old Town may still feel busy. October is another good month to visit, with cooler weather and Tbilisoba festivities.
If you're visiting Narikala, take the cable car from Rike Park and walk down towards Abanotubani. That route saves you a steep uphill return and brings you straight to the sulfur-bath district.
