Visiting Changshu in January
Cold, grey days
January feels damp and chilly in Changshu. Days reach about 8°C, while nights can sit around freezing. Rain falls on several days, and cloudy skies are common, so the cold can feel sharper than the thermometer suggests.
Sightseeing still works if you keep to shorter walks and duck indoors between them. Yushan's wooded paths are quieter in winter, but wet steps can be slippery. Save a long visit to Shanghu Lake for a brighter day; grey skies can make the views feel flat.
Lunar New Year changes things
Chinese New Year sometimes falls in January, though its date shifts each year. When it does, expect more domestic travel, busy transport and closures around the holiday. Changshu may feel much quieter before or after the rush, but don't assume every shop or restaurant will keep its usual hours.
If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the holiday itself. January is generally a quieter, lower-season time than October, Changshu's best-known month for pleasant weather. Prices are often less pressured than in autumn, but holiday travel can change that.
Make the most of Yushan
Plan a cold or rainy spell around a warm meal of Changshu roast chicken, a local speciality. It's a better fit for a damp afternoon than lingering outside at Shanghu Lake.
Travelling with kids? Keep the Yushan visit short and choose a clear spell, rather than turning a chilly walk into an all-day outing. January has limited daylight, so you'll have less time for outdoor stops than in spring or autumn. The nearby old town offers a useful indoor break, and you can return to the hill when the weather clears.
