Wuxi's winter is chilly, damp and often cloudy. Days reach about 8°C, while nights can hover around freezing. Rain falls on several days, and the short daylight leaves less time for outdoor stops.

You can still enjoy Huishan Ancient Town, where lanes and ancestral halls make a good slow wander. Nanchan Temple and the nearby canal are pleasant for a shorter outing, then warm up with Wuxi-style soup dumplings. Yuantouzhu, on Taihu Lake, can feel cold and exposed; save a long lakeside visit for a brighter day. Don't expect the plum blossoms there in January.

Holidays and crowds

New Year's Day brings a public holiday, but January is usually quieter than autumn, Wuxi's best-known visiting season. Hotel rates are often gentler than in October, though prices and crowds can rise if Lunar New Year falls in January. Its date changes each year, and some shops or services may close around the holiday.

If you hate crowds, choose a weekday for Huishan Ancient Town and avoid travelling during the Lunar New Year rush.

Getting around Wuxi in January

January suits a city break with indoor stops and short walks, rather than a full day outdoors. The Grand Canal area is easy to pair with Nanchan Temple, and you can duck into cafés when the damp cold sets in.

For a local winter treat, try Wuxi's sweet, soy-braised pork ribs at a restaurant near Nanchan Temple. At Yuantouzhu, check which paths and boat services are operating before making the lake your main outing; winter conditions can limit the experience.
