December weather in Wuxi

December feels chilly and often damp, with daytime highs around 10°C and nights close to freezing. Rain is lighter than in November, but the cloud and humidity can make the cold linger. You'll get some sunshine, though daylight is short.

It's a good time for slower visits to Huishan Ancient Town or the indoor galleries at Wuxi Museum. You can also visit Nanchan Temple and warm up with a bowl of hot soup nearby. Long walks beside Taihu Lake may feel bleak on grey, windy days, so save those for a brighter spell.

Festivals and winter sights

December has no major public holiday in Wuxi, and Christmas isn't a public holiday in China. Some shopping areas may put up Christmas decorations, but don't expect the city to revolve around the holiday. The famous Yuantouzhu cherry blossoms are a spring attraction, not a December one.

If you hate crowds, December is a calmer choice than October, Wuxi's best month overall. It's winter low season, so sights can feel quieter and accommodation may cost less than in busier months. Weekends can still draw local visitors to popular places such as Lingshan Grand Buddha.

Make the cold work for you

Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor visits short, then warm up inside Wuxi's lively Nanchan Temple area. Try Wuxi-style spare ribs, a local dish with a sweet, savoury sauce; they're especially welcome after a chilly walk.

For a more sheltered outing, take a taxi or local bus to Huishan Ancient Town and focus on its lanes, ancestral halls and gardens. The stone paths can be slick after rain, so watch your step. A warm drink nearby makes a useful break before heading back out.
