May weather in Wuxi

May feels warm and damp, with afternoons reaching 27°C and evenings cooling to around 17°C. Rain falls on about ten days, and cloudy skies are common, but you'll still get plenty of usable daylight. It's a comfortable month for walking around Huishan Ancient Town or taking a boat ride on Taihu Lake.

The showers can interrupt a full day outdoors, so keep indoor stops like the Wuxi Museum in mind. June is hotter and much wetter, while April is cooler and slightly rainier.

May holidays and crowds

Labour Day on May 1 brings a public holiday period, and popular sights can get crowded. Train stations, Taihu Lake attractions and central areas may feel especially busy then. Prices for hotels and transport can rise around the holiday, compared with quieter weekdays.

If you hate crowds, visit outside the Labour Day break and avoid weekend afternoons at Lingshan Grand Buddha. May is a lively spring month, but it's not as reliably calm or mild as Wuxi's best month, October.

Making the most of your visit

For a relaxed city day, wander Nanchang Street, then head to Huishan Ancient Town for old lanes and local snacks. If rain rolls in, the museum makes a good change of pace. The weather also suits a lakeside outing, though don't count on unbroken sunshine.

Travelling with kids? Keep Taihu Lake for a clear spell, and use a rainy afternoon for indoor sights. At Yuantouzhu, famous for spring cherry blossoms, May is past the main blossom season. A practical tip: check the Taihu Lake ferry route before setting out from Yuantouzhu, since the boat trip is the point of going there.
