Mild days, damp trails

May feels warm without June's heavier heat. Afternoons reach 27°C, while evenings cool to around 17°C. Rain falls on about 10 days, and the air can feel sticky, so a shower may interrupt a long walk. The clouds soften the light, but there's still enough sunshine for exploring.

Yixing Bamboo Sea suits a cool, clear day, when you can walk among the hills and bamboo. After rain, its paths may be slippery. Shanjuan Cave is a useful alternative for a wet afternoon, while Dingshu's pottery shops make a good stop between showers.

May Day crowds

China's Labour Day holiday falls in May, though the official break dates can vary. Popular sights and transport can get busy around the holiday, especially with domestic visitors. Check your dates before settling on a quiet visit.

Outside that holiday period, May is generally calmer than October, Yixing's best-known month for a visit. Prices may also be easier than during October's busy season, but expect a holiday bump around Labour Day. Families who want an easier pace will likely prefer the weeks outside the holiday.

May's rain adds up to 95 mm, close to April's 99 mm, so showers are part of the season rather than a rare surprise. June is hotter and much wetter, making May a comfortable choice for walking and sightseeing. Skip exposed hill paths when storms are passing, and use a cave or pottery visit as a backup.

At Yixing Bamboo Sea, save the steepest paths for a dry spell; wet steps can slow your walk. In Dingshu, look for Yixing's famous purple clay teapots, known locally as zisha. You'll get a feel for the town's craft without needing a sunny day.
