Best Time to Visit Yixing

Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

April, May, October and November all rate Excellent, and October scores best of all. In April the air is mild and the tea hills around the town turn green. Yixing is famous for its purple clay teapots (zisha) and its tea, so this is a good time to walk the hills with a cup in hand. May gets warmer, with highs of 27°C, but it's still comfortable.

October is the driest of the good months, with only 8 rainy days and the most sun of the year outside December. It suits Bamboo Sea, Shanjuan Cave and the pottery workshops in Dingshan town. November is cooler and a bit quieter. You'll want a jacket in the evenings, but days are still pleasant for walking.

Summer: hot, wet and sticky

June to August are all rated Poor. June brings the plum rains (meiyu), a long damp spell with rain on 15 days. July is the wettest month at 226 mm and shares the top heat with August, both at 32°C. Nights stay at 26°C, so there's little relief.

If you must come in summer, plan around the weather. Spend mornings on the water at Tuanjiu Lake, or head underground to the caves, which stay cooler than the town. Book museum visits, like the Zisha Museum, for the rainy afternoons. September is still warm and damp, with rain on 12 days, but it eases through the month.

Winter: cold, grey and calm

December to February rate Fair. Days are cool and damp, and lows sit near freezing in January and December. December is the driest of those months, with only 6 rainy days, so it's the best winter pick. Hills can feel raw and misty, but you'll have the tea and bamboo country mostly to yourself.

Winter suits a pottery-focused trip. Browse teapot shops and workshops indoors, then warm up with a pot of local tea. Many Chinese visitors travel during Spring Festival in late January or February, so expect busier trains and more closed shops around then.

Crowds and timing

Yixing is a short trip from Shanghai, Suzhou and Nanjing, so weekends in spring and autumn draw the most visitors. Golden Week, the national holiday in early October, is the one to watch, because October is also the best month. If you hate crowds, go in late October or early November, or choose a weekday in April.
