When to go to Changzhou: a seasonal guide
Four seasons, and two are rough
Changzhou has a proper four-season year. Winter (December to February) is cold and damp. Highs sit around 8 to 10°C, nights drop to freezing, and the sky stays grey. There's no central heating in many older buildings here, so indoor spaces can feel colder than the street.
Summer is the hard part. June brings the plum rain season (meiyu), when the Yangtze delta gets weeks of steady showers. July is the wettest month at 236 mm and the hottest too, tied with August at 32°C by day. Nights stay warm at 25°C, so the air feels heavy even after dark.
Spring and autumn are the sweet spots
March to May is easy. Days warm up from mild to properly summery, and rain is moderate. April is our top pick. It's good for walking the old canal area, Hongmei Park and the grounds around Tianning Temple and its tall pagoda without sweating through your shirt.
October and November are just as good, and a bit drier. You get the most sun of the year, around five hours a day. Evenings are cool enough for a bowl of Changzhou noodles or a plate of the local dried-beancurd snacks. September is a middle case. It's still humid and showery, but the worst heat has gone.
Crowds, festivals and who should go when
Changzhou isn't a big foreign-tourist stop, so crowds come mostly from Chinese holidays. Expect busier sights and trains around Qingming (early April), the May Day break and the National Day week from 1 October. If you hate crowds, aim for mid-April or November.
For families, the big draw is China Dinosaur Park and the Chunqiu Yancheng theme park, and both are far more pleasant in spring or autumn. Summer days are a gamble between heat and downpours, though the indoor halls help on wet afternoons.
Winter works if you want quiet streets and don't mind the chill. Chinese New Year in January or February shuts many small restaurants for a few days, so check before you go. Changzhou also makes a good base for day trips to Wuxi, Suzhou or Nanjing by fast train. Those trips are best in the same spring and autumn windows.
