March feels like a cool, damp start to spring in Wuxi. Afternoons are mild, but evenings can feel chilly, and rain comes on several days. Cloudy skies are common, so Taihu Lake may look less striking than it does in clear weather.

You can still enjoy the gardens and canals. Stroll around Nanchang Street, or visit Huishan Ancient Town between showers. Long outdoor plans are less reliable, so save a flexible indoor stop for a rainy spell. The lake breeze at Yuantouzhu can make a visit feel colder than the city centre.

Blossoms and holidays

Cherry blossoms are the main reason to visit near the end of March. Yuantouzhu, also called Turtle Head Isle, is famous for them, and the blossom season can bring a festival atmosphere. Exact timing shifts with the weather, so don't count on every tree being in bloom.

There isn't a major national holiday that falls in March every year. If you hate crowds, go to Yuantouzhu on a weekday; blossom visitors can make the paths busy. Travelling with kids? Huishan Ancient Town is an easier change of pace if the lake crowds feel like too much.

Crowds and practical tips

March is generally calmer than October, Wuxi's best-known month for a visit, and you may find better-value stays. Late-month blossom crowds are the exception, especially around Yuantouzhu. Rain can also make a long day outdoors less appealing.

For the blossom trip, check the forecast before setting out and take the local bus or a taxi to Yuantouzhu rather than relying on a lakeside walk from downtown. If showers catch you, duck into a teahouse around Nanchang Street and try Wuxi-style xiaolongbao, soup-filled dumplings with a sweet local flavour.
