When to go to Nantong: a seasonal guide
Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
March, April and May all rate Excellent, and so do October and November. April comes out on top, with highs around 21°C and cool mornings. It's good walking weather for Langshan, a group of hills just south of the city with a Buddhist temple on the slopes. Autumn is a close second. October is drier than spring, with fewer rainy days and more sun.
Nantong sits where the Yangtze meets the sea, so the air stays damp all year. Even in the good months, you'll see grey skies. Don't expect postcard blue every day.
Summer: hot, wet and sticky
June to August all rate Poor. July is the wettest month, with rain on 17 days, and August is almost as bad at 16. Lows of 25°C mean nights don't cool down. Afternoons feel heavy.
Early summer brings the plum rain season (meiyu), a long damp spell across the lower Yangtze. It starts in June. If you come anyway, plan indoor stops like the Nantong Museum, one of China's oldest public museums, and the textile and blue-calico (hand-dyed indigo cloth) displays. Save any riverside walks near Haohe for the hours between showers. September is still muggy, but it eases as the month goes on.
Winter: quiet and cold
December to February are cool and damp, with lows near freezing. December is the driest month and has the most sun, so it's the best of the three. January and February feel colder than the numbers suggest because of the humidity, and most buildings have little heating. A hot bowl of noodles or fish soup helps. Nantong is known for its river and sea fish.
Winter is the low season, so you'll have sights mostly to yourself. The big exception is Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February. Many shops and restaurants close for several days as families gather, so check before you go.
Crowds and timing
Nantong isn't a big tourist magnet, so crowds stay light. The busiest times are Chinese public holidays: Labour Day in early May and National Day in the first week of October. Trains and hotels fill up then. If you want the best weather without the rush, aim for mid-to-late April or the last two weeks of October. November is calm and still pleasant.
