March: cool spring days

March feels like a changeover month in Yancheng. Afternoons reach about 15°C, but mornings and evenings can drop to 3°C. Rain falls on around six days, and clouds are common, so expect a mix of bright spells and damp, grey weather.

You can explore the city and take a day trip to the Yellow Sea wetlands, but muddy paths can make long walks less pleasant after rain. The coast can also feel chilly, so don't count on beach weather. April is warmer and a little wetter; March's cooler air suits sightseeing better than lingering outdoors all day.

Events and crowds

March doesn't have a major fixed public holiday in Yancheng. The Lantern Festival sometimes falls in March, but its date shifts with the lunar calendar. If it does, look for local lantern displays and holiday activity around town.

If you hate crowds, March is a calmer choice than April and May, two of Yancheng's best-known travel months. Visitor numbers and accommodation prices are generally lower than during those spring peaks, though weekends can still be busier than weekdays. You'll get more breathing room at popular sights, but fewer warm, sunny days than in April.

Make the wetlands work

Travelling with kids? Keep a visit to the Yellow Sea wetlands flexible: a wet morning can make outdoor paths less comfortable, while a clearer afternoon may be much nicer.

At Yancheng National Nature Reserve, ask locally which visitor areas and routes are open before setting out. The reserve protects rare red-crowned cranes, but sightings aren't guaranteed. March is a transition from winter, so don't plan your whole day around seeing them. Check the forecast before travelling out from the city, and save indoor sights for a rainy spell.
