January weather

January is cold and often grey in Yancheng. Days reach about 7°C, and nights can drop to around -3°C. Rain is fairly light, but damp air and few sunny hours make the chill hang around. You'll want to keep outdoor visits short and warm up indoors between stops.

The weather suits museums and a wander around the city centre. On a brighter day, head to the Yancheng National Nature Reserve, where winter is a good time to look for red-crowned cranes. Long, exposed walks through the wetlands can feel raw, though, so don't make them your only plan.

Holidays and crowds

New Year's Day is a public holiday, but it's usually a brief pause rather than a peak travel period. Lunar New Year sometimes falls in January, though the date shifts each year. When it does, expect more domestic travel and some businesses to close for the holiday.

Outside those dates, January is quieter than April, May and October, which are Yancheng's best months to visit. Hotels and transport are generally less busy than in those seasons. If crowds bother you, January can be a calm choice, as long as you don't mind the cold and the shorter sunny spells.

Winter plans

If you're birdwatching, check locally about access and viewing areas at the nature reserve before you set out. Wetland routes can be exposed, so you may not want to stay outside for long. A shorter visit can still be rewarding when the cranes are around.

Travelling with kids? Pair a reserve visit with a warm indoor stop rather than spending the whole day outside. Keep plans flexible, too. February is milder but wetter, so January's drier days are its main advantage, and January averages only a few hours of sunshine a day. Your best outdoor outing may be the one that lands on a clear spell.
