January: cold and quiet

Yangzhou in January feels damp and chilly, with afternoons around 7°C and nights dipping to -2°C. Cloud often softens the light, and rain falls on several days. The canals and gardens are peaceful, but lingering outdoors can feel cold.

You can still enjoy the indoor halls at Daming Temple and warm up over Yangzhou morning tea. Slender West Lake is lovely for a short stroll, but its open paths can feel exposed on grey, wet days. Save long garden visits for brighter spells.

Holidays and crowds

New Year's Day brings a short public holiday in China, though it's usually a quieter time than spring or autumn. Lunar New Year sometimes falls in January; when it does, travel gets much busier around the holiday, and some local businesses close.

If you hate crowds, January outside the Lunar New Year period is a good time to wander Dongguan Street without the peak-season crush. Hotels and tours are generally easier to find, and often cheaper than in April or October, Yangzhou's best-known travel months.

Make the most of winter

For a cosy break, duck into a teahouse near Slender West Lake and order a pot of tea with steamed buns. Yangzhou is famous for its morning tea, so this is a satisfying way to turn a cold morning into part of the visit.

Travelling with kids? Keep the outdoor parts short and build in a warm stop around Dongguan Street. January's limited daylight and chilly evenings make a full day outside less appealing. Check whether Lunar New Year overlaps your trip, since opening hours can change.
