October is one of Yangzhou's best months, with mild days and cool evenings. The high is 23°C and the low is 13°C, so you can walk without summer's sticky heat. Rain falls on 8 days, but showers needn't spoil a visit. Save indoor stops, such as the Yangzhou Museum, for a wet spell.

Slender West Lake is lovely for a long stroll, and the gardens around Geyuan are easier to enjoy in this gentle weather. National Day crowds

If you hate crowds, visit after the holiday and avoid the busiest sights at weekends. You'll find a calmer pace for wandering the old streets and sampling Yangzhou fried rice.

Travelling with kids? The mild weather makes a boat ride at Slender West Lake more comfortable than in the summer heat. Check whether boats are running on the day, especially after rain.

For a local start, head to Fuchun Teahouse for Yangzhou morning tea, with steamed buns and other small dishes. Go early: it's a popular stop, and a leisurely tea can take time. Then walk towards Dongguan Street for old shopfronts and canal-side lanes. October's shorter days make this a handy way to enjoy the city before dusk.
