Mild days outdoors

October is one of Nanjing's best months for walking around. Days feel mild, evenings are cooler, and rain is less frequent than in September. You'll still get some wet days, so a riverside stroll or a visit to the gardens can be interrupted by showers.

The weather suits exploring the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, walking beside Xuanwu Lake, or climbing Purple Mountain. You won't have to contend with summer's sticky heat, but the shorter days leave less time for long outings. Save a shaded indoor stop, such as Nanjing Museum, for a rainy spell.

Holiday crowds

China's National Day holiday, from October 1 to 7, brings a major travel rush. Expect busy trains and crowds at popular sights, especially Zhongshan Scenic Area. Hotels and transport can cost more than in quieter months.

If you hate crowds, visit outside the holiday week. October is still a popular month, thanks to comfortable weather, but it's calmer once the holiday ends. Compared with the hot, rainy summer, it's a much easier time to explore; compared with November, it's warmer and generally more sought-after.

Local tips for Nanjing

October can also bring the Mid-Autumn Festival, though its date changes each year and it sometimes falls in September. Look out for mooncakes in local bakeries if it coincides with your trip. Autumn is also a good time to try Nanjing salted duck, a local speciality.

Travelling with kids? Keep a flexible afternoon for a rainy day. At Zhongshan Scenic Area, don't try to squeeze every sight into one visit: the paths between attractions take time, and the grounds are large. Pick a main stop, such as the mausoleum, then enjoy a slower walk nearby.
