Nanjing Weather in June

June: hot and damp

June feels warm, sticky and often cloudy in Nanjing. Days reach about 31°C, and evenings stay mild. Rain falls on 12 days, with far more rain than in May. July is wetter still, so June is a step into the rainy summer.

The long daylight helps you fit in sights, but humidity can make a full day outdoors tiring. Try the Nanjing Museum or the shaded paths around Xuanwu Lake, and save strenuous walks up Purple Mountain for a cooler, drier spell. Heavy showers can disrupt outdoor plans, so don't build your whole visit around a hike.

Festivals and crowds

The Dragon Boat Festival often falls in June, though its date changes each year. You'll see zongzi, sticky rice parcels wrapped in leaves, sold for the holiday. Some years bring dragon boat events, but don't assume a race will be on during your stay.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling over the public holiday. It draws domestic visitors, and popular sights can feel busier than on an ordinary June day. Outside the holiday, June is generally quieter than July and August, with less pressure on rooms and fares than in peak summer.

Make the weather work

Travelling with kids? Keep the day flexible, with an indoor stop ready when rain rolls in. The Confucius Temple area by the Qinhuai River works well for an evening stroll, food and a shorter outing after a sticky afternoon.

At Xuanwu Lake, use the metro to reach Xuanwumen station, then enter by the nearby gate. You can enjoy the lake without committing to a long walk in humid weather. If showers begin, duck into a museum rather than waiting them out on the exposed lakeside paths.
