April: mild spring days

April is one of Nanjing's best months, with comfortable days and cool evenings. The high reaches 22°C, while mornings and nights can feel chilly. Rain falls on about eight days, so showers may interrupt a walk, but they rarely define the whole month.

You'll have good conditions for the city walls, Xuanwu Lake and the tree-lined paths around Purple Mountain. The 12.8 hours of daylight leave plenty of time for sightseeing. Skip long outdoor plans when rain sets in; the stone steps at Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum can get slippery.

Blossoms and Qingming

Cherry blossoms draw visitors to Jiming Temple and nearby Xuanwu Lake. Qingming Festival, the tomb-sweeping holiday, also falls in early April some years. Families visit ancestral graves, and popular sights can feel crowded around the holiday.

If you hate crowds, visit Jiming Temple on a weekday and continue on foot to Xuanwu Lake.

Crowds and local tips

April is popular, especially on weekends and during Qingming. Expect more visitors, and potentially higher hotel prices, than in quieter winter months. It's usually less hot than May, when Nanjing's high rises to 28°C, but spring weekends can still be busy.

For an easy blossom walk, start at Jiming Temple and follow the paths toward Xuanwu Lake. The temple's entrance area gets congested during peak bloom, so keep moving rather than treating it as a quiet place to linger. If rain catches you, duck into the Nanjing Museum; it's a useful indoor stop before heading back outside.
