February: cold and damp

February in Yangzhou feels like winter: afternoons are cool, and nights can hover around freezing. Rain falls on several days, while cloudy skies often soften the light. You'll find January colder and drier; March is milder but wetter.

The weather still works for a slow visit to Ge Garden or the Yangzhou Museum, with warm stops between sights. Slender West Lake is lovely for a walk, but its open paths can feel chilly in damp weather. Save a long boat ride or a full day outdoors for a brighter spell.

Lunar New Year and lanterns

Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February, and the dates change each year. If your visit overlaps, expect more domestic travellers and possible holiday closures. The Lantern Festival, held on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, can also fall in February. Slender West Lake is known for seasonal lantern displays, though dates and events vary.

Travelling with kids? A lantern display can make an evening visit to the lake more fun, but check that it's running during your stay.

Quieter, with one exception

Outside the holiday period, February is generally quieter than Yangzhou's popular April and October visits. Accommodation can be less costly than in those busier months, though prices and crowds rise around Lunar New Year.

For a local warming stop, try Yangzhou fried rice near Dongguan Street, then explore the old lanes nearby. If you're visiting Slender West Lake, ask locally whether its lantern event is on before making a special evening trip. The lake is a much more exposed place to linger than the sheltered streets around Dongguan Street.
