When to go to Huai'an: a seasonal guide

Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

March to May and October to November are the months to aim for. Our comfort score rates all of them Excellent, and April, May and October top the list. Days are mild, nights are cool, and you can walk all day without getting soaked or sweaty.

April and May suit a city-break pace. You can wander the Grand Canal waterfront, visit the Premier Zhou Enlai's Former Residence in the old town, and stroll around Qingjiangpu without watching the sky. Huai'an is also known for Huaiyang cuisine, one of China's four great regional styles. Try the soft-shelled turtle dishes and the local braised eel noodles. Autumn is just as pleasant. October is the sunniest of the lot, and November is clear but chillier.

Tourist crowds stay modest here compared with Nanjing or Suzhou. The busiest days are around the Qingming holiday in early April, the May Day break and National Day in the first week of October. Domestic visitors travel then, so expect fuller trains and hotels.

Summer: hot, then very wet

June is warm and getting damp. Rain falls on about 12 days, and the evenings are sticky. July is the low point. It's the hottest month, rain falls on 21 days, and humidity sits above 80%. August is nearly as bad. This is the plum rain season, when the wet spell sweeps across the Yangtze region. Huai'an sits just north of that zone, but it still gets soaked.

If you must come in summer, keep plans flexible and lean on indoor stops like museums and long restaurant lunches. The upside is lower prices and thin crowds, though you'll pay for them in humidity. Early September is easing off but still showery.

Winter: cold, dry and quiet

December to February is chilly, with lows just below freezing in the coldest weeks. January is the coldest month, with a high of only 6°C. It's dry and often grey, and the damp air makes it feel colder than the number suggests. Heating in older buildings can be patchy, so check your hotel.

Winter is the quietest season, apart from the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) in late January or February. Many local families travel then, and some small restaurants close for a few days. If you like empty streets and hot noodle soup, it can be a good time. If you want comfortable sightseeing, wait for March.
